I stumbled upon this 2001 article about decision making. Short read – 6 pages.

Not a summary since you can read the whole article.
They propose three approaches to making sensemaking & decisions (image 2)

1. Thinking first – works well when the issue is clear and data is reliable. Whereas a conventional belief may be that we follow a rational decision making approach from defining -> diagnosing -> designing -> deciding, the “rational approach turns out to be uncommon”.
2. Seeing first – requiring many elements, commitment to solutions is key, and comms across boundaries is essential
3. Doing first – works well for when the situation is novel and confusing (aligned with sensemaking perspectives from Weick: enactment -> selection -> retention)
