Formalised safety systems miss “three-quarters” of established factors linked to performance

Not much to say here – just found this an interesting extract from the ‘Digging Deeper’ focused on safety within NSW mining.

They observe relating to the adoption of formalised safety management systems:

·        “Smaller organisations that take on such systems are often overwhelmed by their complexity”

·        And these systems “can be expensive to establish and maintain and are generally subject to internal and external audit”

·        “Hale and Hovden claim on the basis of their systematic literature review that ‘this limited structural approach [formal OHSMS] misses three-quarters of the factors that have proven links to performance’ (Hale and Hovden 1998: 156)” (emphasis added)

Note: Caution with applying the other findings about the lack of established links between SMSs and elements of performance – this report is from 2007.

There’s now quite a lot more evidence establishing many links (but still pretty lacklustre, overall – check out my site as I’ve covered heaps of these studies).
