Generative artificial intelligence adoption and managerial well-being in construction organizations

Can GenAI improve workplace well-being and work-life balance? Perhaps.

This survey study of 261 construction industry managerial professionals in Nigeria provided insights.

Findings:

·        “findings reveal a strong and positive association between GenAI adoption and both dimensions of managerial well-being”

·        “Predictive scheduling, documentation automation, and design support emerged as the most influential applications, underscoring that not all AI tools contribute equally to improved work-life outcomes”

·        “responsible deployment of GenAI can improve efficiency and well-being .. However, the benefits are not automatic. Sustained value creation depends on addressing ethical risks, transparency, and the uneven distribution of technological gains across roles and organizations”

·        “The dominance of AI variables in the models suggests that work life quality is particularly sensitive to tools that reshape how work is organized, paced, and cognitively managed”

·        “Tools linked to workload reduction and anticipatory decision-making such as predictive scheduling and documentation automation consistently ranked highest” which “directly compress managerial time demands”

·        “Design support tools also ranked highly, reflecting their role in accelerating iteration, reducing error correction cycles, and improving decision confidence”

·        “some AI applications showed weaker or inconsistent effects. Tools focused on advanced analytics or experimental generative functions delivered smaller gains, likely because their benefits are indirect, require higher skill levels, or are not embedded in daily managerial routines”

·        “Gains in well being were not proportional to incremental increases in AI use” and “Beyond a certain point, additional AI capability yielded diminishing returns, suggesting saturation effects”

·        “AI driven competencies are strongly and positively associated with both work life balance and work life quality among construction managers. The use of machine learning models, particularly non-linear methods, shows that these relationships are not simple or uniform”
